The Do’s and Don’ts of Getting Recruited

Dos and Don'ts of Getting Recruited - PSF

The age of recruiting can be stressful and overwhelming at times. For many athletes playing college, softball is a dream and can be nerve-racking when waiting for that dream. Here are some “Dos and Don’ts” when being recruited at a softball tournament.

  • Take care of your equipment. Coaches want players who can handle their responsibilities. This means picking up after yourself and carrying your own equipment.
  • Showcase leadership qualities on the field. Coaches love to recruit athletes for more than their talent. Be vocal on the field and show enthusiasm for playing the game.
  • Have a positive attitude. Coaches look for your reactions when you sit on the bench, so coaches will turn away if you appear mad or upset. College softball never promises 100% playing time so learn how to sit on the bench and work harder.

  • Try to talk to a coach when you’re not old enough to be recruited. NCAA coaches cannot contact a player until after June 15th of their sophomore year of High School. This means that if you approach them, they are not allowed to speak to you, creating an awkward moment. This age may differ for NAIA or NJCAA.
  • Show poor body language. Your body can show a lot of what you’re feeling after an error or a strikeout. Instead of hanging your head or pouting, you should accept the failure and move on to the next play. This shows maturity and composure to coaches.
  • Be silent on the bench. If you are on your phone or not engaged in the game, it shows coaches that you are not committed to the sport. Always cheer and be involved in the game; you have a role, whether you’re playing or sitting.
